Open Source Development Labs (OSDL—now the Linux Foundation) wanted to use a timeline to highlight the growth in the number of patents donated to the Patent Commons. They had tackled this problem once before, but the resulting Web page did not have the professional look they wanted.
We found an open source Timeline component on the Web created by MIT's SIMILE project, and made some small changes to the component to meet OSDL's requirements. Then we connected it to the Patent Commons' database of patents. We also added some features that made Timeline's scrolling capabilities more apparent and easier to operate. Finally, we inserted the timeline page into the existing site.
By using the Timeline component, we were able to quickly deliver a quality, cost-effective solution.
